Matt Bar is founder and executive director of Bible Raps, a non-profit born from Matt’s desire to engage his Hebrew School classes on a deeper and more contemporary level. Bible Raps launched out of Bar’s participation in the PresenTense Institute during the summer of 2007. He continued to further his Jewish education during his year of study in 2008 at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem. In 2011, Bar was named to The New York Jewish Week’s “36 Under 36″ list. Prior to founding Bible Raps, Bar was featured on MTV and NBC, opened for Grammy winning group Outkast, and performed at numerous clubs and venues as a folk rapper. Matt currently resides in Philadelphia with his fiancée, Rebecca Karp.
Bible Raps is an educational initiative that uses hip-hop music to breathe new life into the teaching of core Jewish texts. Since 2007, the project has worked with over 125,000 youth at camps, day schools, and other Jewish institutions, performing tracks and guiding workshop participants in the composition of original hip-hop Torah. The mandate is to inject appreciation and excitement into Jewish learning by meeting young Jewish students where youth culture intersects with vigor of Torah.
