Nails + Learning + Vision: Tivnu Builds a Strong Foundation
Tivnu: Building Justice is a social justice organization that combines advocacy for the fulfillment of basic human needs, Jewish study, construction work and training, and leadership development. Through its various programs, Tivnu offers Jewish youth the opportunity for hands-on work that addresses the issue of housing and other fundamental social needs, building homes or undertaking internships with direct service and advocacy organizations.
When Tivnu started the Dual Investment Program in September 2012, however, it was struggling to realize its bold vision to launch the only Jewish gap year program in the United States. By participating in the Program, Steve Eisenbach-Budner, Tivnu’s executive director, learned the skills he needed to succeed.
“I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that Tivnu would not exist in its present form if not for my having been a JVG Fellow,” Eisenbach-Budner says. “JVG helped me gain experience and knowledge as well as increased hard skills in necessary areas.”
As a result of the Program, Tivnu:
- Recruited 8 participants for its first Gap Year program.
- Exceeded its fundraising goals by $50,000.
- Formed partnerships with seven grassroots social advocacy organizations as well as with national and local Jewish groups.
With its first Gap Year program currently underway, Tivnu has its sights on expansion. Next year, Steve hopes to recruit 16 – 18 participants.
