Fellows Explore and Share Visions for Growth, Next Steps
January 25, 2012
JVG Fellows convened this past December for their third full retreat as part of the 2010-2012 Dual Investment Program. Held in Long Island City and overlooking the Manhattan skyline, the retreat focused on issues of growth and sustainability, with special attention to the development of a strong board to support growth and to help sustain an organization.
Fellows heard from JVG board members and alumni, industry experts, and seasoned entrepreneurs, including an Ashoka Fellow and professionals from the Blue Ridge and Robin Hood Foundations. Through one-on-one coaching, peer consultation, and group facilitation sessions, the Fellows were challenged to think critically and strategically about the direction of their respective ventures, and about the assets needed to move their visions forward.
Special event. After spending four intensive days thinking through growth models, board development, and organizational direction, the retreat culminated with an intimate and celebratory event, hosted at the Nathan Cummings Foundation. Surrounded by a distinguished group of guests – including past, current, and potential future supporters of their ventures, as well as other influential communal leaders – the Fellows shared their visions for their ventures moving forward. Their collective presentation was followed by a candid discussion about the challenges and opportunities facing these young ventures, and how the community can best support their efforts.
A highlight of the evening (for JVG staff, at least!) was watching the respect and support that these eight entrepreneurs have for each other. Over the past year and a half, they have experienced setbacks and triumphs, growing pains and celebrations together. The cohort has become a community, and we know that this will help sustain each of the Fellows long after the 2010-2012 Dual Investment Program formally closes this coming May.
