Challah for Hunger

www.challahforhunger.org

Challah for Hunger (CfH) bakes and sells challah bread to raise money and awareness for social justice causes. Through this process, CfH trains leaders, teaches critical philanthropy, builds community and bridges between communities, and inspires. CfH was founded at Scripps College in Claremont, California, in November 2004 and has since expanded to consist of almost thirty chapters, primarily on US college campuses. Each chapter uses half of its profits to support an organization of its choosing and donates the other half to the CfH national cause, Darfur, through the American Jewish World Service. Other current beneficiary organizations include Jewish World Watch; Proyecto Jardin community garden in Boyle Heights, CA; Masbia Soup Kitchen in Boro Park, NY; and Sharsheret.

Bio
Eli has transformed kneading dough into an empowering experience for young Jews across the United States. After founding Challah for Hunger while attending Scripps College in Claremont, California, she was cited in Bill Clinton’s book, Giving, as an exemplar of “compelling” giving. Originally from Austin, Texas, Eli graduated from high school early to intern in the DC offices of former Senator Mark Dayton and went on to attend Young Judaea’s Year Course in Israel. An alumna of the PresenTense Institute and ROI, she coordinated Mark Strama’s Campaign Academy for high school and college students to learn campaign basics in 2006, and served as a program associate of Hazon’s Food Team before assuming full-time directorship at Challah for Hunger.
